Origen:
La celebración tiene una evidente raíz religiosa, con origen en el 610 d.C. cuando, según la tradición islámica, el arcángel Gabriel se le apareció al profeta Muhammad y le reveló el Corán, el libro sagrado del islam. La revelación, Laylat Al Qadar (Noche del Destino),

 Eid al-Fitr o Fiesta de la Ruptura del Ayuno, un día muy importante para la comunidad musulmana y en el que las familias se reúnen para comer juntas y, en ocasiones, también se realiza intercambio de regalos.

No realizar el ayuno de Ramadán sin una justificación válida se considera un pecado grave en el Islam, ya que es uno de sus pilares. Requiere arrepentimiento sincero y una expiación (kaffarah) que puede incluir ayunar 60 días seguidos o alimentar a 60 personas por cada día perdido. Si la causa es justificada (enfermedad, viaje), el ayuno se recupera después.

Como cada año, cuando se acerca el primer cuarto creciente que da comienzo al noveno mes lunar del calendario musulmán, los fieles del Islam se preparan para iniciar el Ramadán, un periodo de recogimiento y acercamiento con Dios en el que los creyentes ayunan durante el día para conmemorar la revelación del Corán al profeta Mahoma
